Circle (2015) - Twilight Zoned Game Horror

“Does everyone on earth have an equal right to an equal share of its resources?” - Answer would be population growth and the planet’s limited resources, is no. Equality and an abstract “justice for all” must give way to the necessity that some survive.

The plot of the Movie:

Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione's debut horror-thriller Circle deals with the fifty strangers facing execution have to pick one person among them to live. This movie was inspired by the 1957 drama “12 Angry Men”.

The movie Circle starts with fifty strangers waking up in a dark room, each one standing in a designated spot. All of them are arranged in a circle around a machine. At one moment they find out that one of them is killed every two minutes or when they attempt to leave.  The people are quickly beginning freaking out.

There are certain rules in this killer game
  • No stepping off your circle. If you step off your circle you will die quicker than any other rule being broken.
  • No touching other people. That will set off a warning alarm.
  • Every few minutes someone random will die. Unless they vote.
  • The person with the most votes will die.
  • You cannot vote for yourself.
  • In the case of a tie, the voters can vote amongst the two, or even change their vote to someone else

If someone ignores the rules, a beam from the dome kills them, and their body is quickly removed. At first, the group does not know what is going on. But they soon realize that it’s a devilish game, predicting that the last person standing will be alive. The people attempt to make co-ordinated decisions. The group realizes that this game allows them to use hand gestures to vote for who dies next.

After several minutes, the group begins to talk and gain an understanding that each of them can individually vote for who they want to be killed next. In hopes of finding a way out of their situation, the large group agrees to first vote for the elder people there. This doesn’t last long, forcing the group to try alternative approaches. There are a lot of people in that circle, the police, a rich guy, a wife-beater, a priest, a pregnant woman, and a child.

When the people know that death close at hand, the group begins to use social prejudices to determine who is worth surviving. Everything that sets human beings apart plays a role including age, social class, immigration, sexual orientation, language, religion, occupation, and race. They started to vote for different people sometimes they vote for, someone who was fussing, and then Nationality wise and then for Black vs White also.

At the stage of half past, they start debating on who should live. So the group is divided into two, Eric and some people want the pregnant women and/or child to live and the other group is against them.  Finally, the Eric group voted and eliminated the opponent group. Some of the people sacrifice their life for pregnant women and that child. Finally, the count is reduced to three – Eric, pregnant women, and that child. Eric and the girl agree to simultaneously sacrifice themselves. As the girl commits suicide, Eric instead casts a last-second vote to kill the pregnant woman.

Making their feature debut, writers-directors Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione keep their ambitions in check. The Circle is an experiment that rewards the fittest with a chance of survival. It is based on Darwin's theory of 'Survival of the Fittest'. This film was a look at socialism, morality, psychology, and self-preservation. The film wants to talk about human nature and the survival instinct.

Despite the disappointing ending, Circle is a well-crafted debut from filmmakers Aaron Hann and Mario Miscione. The circle is an intense ride through the human psyche and makes you wonder how you would respond in such a situation.
