The "imaginary" Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) falls in love with David (Mark Ruffalo), the only person who can "see" her, in "Just Like Heaven."

Plot of the Movie:
Elizabeth Masterson is a dedicated, workaholic doctor who is way too busy for life. One night, she gets into a horrible car accident and becomes a spirit stuck between heaven and earth. She doesn’t know she’s dead and thinks nothing has happened until she meets David Abbott, a lonely architect, who rents her old apartment. David thinks he’s crazy by seeing Elizabeth’s spirit and tries all ways to get rid of her, but she just won’t go away. Although the two are complete opposites they somehow may just form a relationship.

Elizabeth Masterson (Reese Witherspoon), is a fastidious workaholic doctor at a San Francisco hospital and yet, Elizabeth can't seem to develop a life outside work. Her sister invites her to dinner to meet a supposed nice guy, but driving there, after more than 24 hours on duty, she met with a serious car accident while on her way to a blind date

Several months later a young architect named David Abbott (Mark Ruffalo) can’t seem to find a furnished apartment that meets his needs. When David moves into her old apartment, Elizabeth’s spirit begins to appear to David in the apartment with ghostly properties and abilities that make it clear that something is not right. She can suddenly appear and disappear, walk or move through walls and objects, and once takes over his actions.

At first, he thinks she's nuts, then realizes that she's a ghost. Elizabeth is still unaware of her past life and refuses to think she is dead. David begins to wonder if he is losing his mind. So he attempts to exorcise her, but that doesn't work. Later, he decides to help her to find out who she is or was. Since only David can see and hear her, others think that he is hallucinating and talking to himself.

In assistance by a psychic bookstore clerk, Darryl (Jon Heder), Elizabeth and David find out who she is, what happened to her, and why they are connected. She is not dead, but in a coma, her body being kept on life support at the hospital where she used to work. He asks his friend/therapist Jack (Donal Logue) to help him, and Jack is found to be Abby's former college boyfriend who had set up a blind date for David with Elizabeth on the night of the accident.

Elizabeth awakens from the coma with the help of David But she does not remember anything that happened during the coma or any of the events with David. Finally, Elizabeth remembers everything when David called her nickname “Lizzy” and touches her.

"Just Like Heaven." is refreshingly clever about the dilemma of characters dealing with an extraordinary situation that they will have trouble convincing other people is real. It sends a valuable message about being too busy and missing out on what's really important in life. The script is smarter than the typical rom-com, and Waters directs cannily, never letting either the emotion or the comedy get out of control
